New academic year, new beginning, new field of voluntary work.

Let me first clarify that being a volunteer doesn’t mean working without being paid as I many times hear people trying to convince me. Being a volunteer is to devote ourselves – our energy, time, knowledge and joy – to a field we are interested in. It doesn’t necessarily need to be working with the elderly or children, nor does it show a form of compensating our own boring lives through listening to other’s traumatic experiences.
For me, being a volunteer is to offer a smile to a person, it's to listen to a friend in need and it's to chat to a lonely person we meet on a train. In this sense we are all volunteers whenever we do something for the other without considering what we get in return and when it will pay off (possibly in the form of €…). But some people, who’s friends have not enough need for our generous listening, tend to spread this circle of charity… joke :) What I want to say is basically that volunteering can be infinitively creative and fun for we can act in whichever field we prefer.
I shall leave the discussion that the same altruism guiding us is basically only a form of egoism and a way to find our place in this world for another occasion…

The new field of work that I’m currently getting to know and starting to act in is violence against women (and children), a very complex and interesting field that still needs a lot of input.

To end this post I’ll repeat a well known but never out-of-date thought:

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi

Peace,
Tina
